Very disappointed

March 2015(Kona)

We had high hopes. But, its a too-small cabin (Coco bure) that was very buggy, inside and out. No room to move. Kitchen is DETACHED, means you walk thru two doors and down stairs... Bure is quite far from beach, about 150 meters, and the beach is truly a tidal flat, not really a swimming place. If you prefer isolation, this is 20 min. from town. Nothing else near. Gene was a nice enough host--knows the town and area very well, and willing to share, but we had communicated with him for over a year! prior to our stay. Paid US$ 506 for 4 nights, stayed for 2 because we were so disappointed, and left early. No refund, but we did get dinged for two very bad meals....leftover chicken fried rice(from the night before, I hope), and a bowl of diced lettuce. Salad. $25. That was rude!! And cheap on the owner's part to simply charge us for crap. Obviously, there's no real staff, nor facilities. Beware of that. The ''blue hole'' is fantastic snorkeling! But, it seems intimidating to walk the 15 min. to get there. Must be done at low tide only. It really is worth it. Sorry, Gene. After our travels to other places in Fiji, this place has been misrepresented, and should be valued at US$40.

The Ultimate paradise definitely lives up to its name…

September 2014(London, UK)

My wife and I recently travelled to Fiji and Savusavu to get married and dive extensively. After extensive research on resorts and bure’s (small cottage) on Vanua Levu near Savusavu we found Siga Siga sands. Very reasonably priced and offered self-catering accommodation and the option to order in food from his on site cook which was very handy. It had an amazing beach and looked picturesque online so we contacted him to see if we could have our wedding and month stay there. Gene the owner and caretaker was on hand and very prompt to answer any emails or questions prior to our arrival which was great service as sometimes getting answers over email in Fiji can take time (Fiji time). Nothing seemed to be too much trouble and it was relaxed approach, which was very refreshing so we decided to book.

We arrived in Savusavu after a grueling 30-hour trip from London. He greeted us at the small airport in Savusavu with a big smile and beautiful handmade flowers made by his staff and picked from his land. Gene kindly offered to take us to town and show us round Savusavu’s main street and this gave us a chance to stock up on some provisions for our stay and impending marriage. He then dropped us back to the Bure on his 20+ acres of pristine beachfront property. The coco bure was traditionally thatched and had ample space for a couple. The kitchen had all the necessary appliances and accessories and if you needed additional items staff were always accommodating in our requests. Free WIFI and a landline telephone in the room that is a real bonus for Fiji as usually these are charged services. Free BBQ that could be moved anywhere in the bure or by the beach that was nice if you wanted to cook yourself. The extensive welcome pack was really useful as it provided a wealth of information and helped us save money whilst in Savusavu. Gene was always there anytime to help or assist in our requests and always fulfilled them quickly and efficiently.

What can I say about the location apart from just paradise and definitely the most picturesque beach and grounds we have ever had the pleasure to stay. It used to be a coconut plantation so lush coconut palms, beautifully groomed lawns and variety of fruit trees on your doorstep what more could you want. Most days we were picking papayas off the trees and finding coconuts on the beach to make smoothies. Also Gene is a growing aubergine and chilies right near the bure that you can pick and use free of charge and cook right away.

The Vanua Levu island has some beautiful spots but this is definitely the very best beach in the area and in perfect condition no rubbish or plastic in sight. Most days we were the only people on the beach. It felt like our own private slice of paradise with hammocks to relax and a world-class snorkeling reef just on your doorstep. On our first morning Gene showed us the best place to snorkel and being an avid diver, snorkeling at Siga Siga sands was excellent and the coral in amazing condition and fish life abundant. Gene also showed us the turquoise swimming lagoon that has a nice sandy bottom and a beautiful place to have a morning swim. Evenings were just as beautiful with Gene allowing us to have fires right on the beach and Fiji really is the best place to star gaze. You can see the Milky Way with the naked eye and it can be mistaken for clouds. The location is perfect for divers as it is close to the best dive sites in Savusavu and the dive operator Koro Sun (they pick you up and drop you off FOC). The jewel in the Fiji diving crown is Namena marine reserve which is only a 2 hour boat away and the famous soft coral dives of the rainbow reef in Taveuni are easily accessed by bus and ferry from right outside the property. Very handy if you want to explore more islands.

Gene and his staff hosted our wedding which was the most perfect day. Our requests for the day were met above and beyond our expectation with no restrictions or limitations. Gene and his staff made the day hassle free for organised things and us seamlessly. Little touches made it very special and unique for us. Flowers picked on site and arranged by Sunita were gorgeous and the carpenter Subash made an amazing bamboo structure we plucked from the internet and made it look 100 times better than the picture or we could have hoped for or envisaged. We had the best day we could have wished for and definitely the best location to have it. Even the 5-star resorts close by take wedding guests to Siga Siga’s beach as it has the most amazing views and beach on the south coast of the island. Gene was even kind enough to take some amazing pictures of the day for us.

If your looking for a quiet, relaxed and untouched paradise then Siga Siga sands is all of those things and much more. It more beautiful than the website depicts and Gene’s hospitality is second to none. We can’t wait to come back next year and would definitely recommend to anyone.

Awesome place, wonderful people!

October 2013(Palma de Mallorca, Spain)

If you really want to experience paradise, just go to Sigasiga. If you don't want to spend your holidays in a typical touristic crowded resort, go there!!.
We stayed in the Coconut bure for, unfortunately, just three days and we had stayed to live there with all the nice people who take care of the cottages!!!! Gene was wonderfully kind and together with all staff he made us feeling like in family. Sunita is a great cook and we highly recommend her "Lovo" and other dishes. Subash was always there to help in whatever you want or need. Again, it was like staying with a family. It was always nice to hear a "Bula!" with a smiling face in any moment of the day.

There is a wonderful swimming lagoon and the snorkelling in the reef lagoon is really amazing. The location of the cottages is just perfect!
We are sorry that we are not English speakers because it's difficult for us to explain how beautiful and wonderful was our stay there (but anyway, just read the previous comments in this web page!).

If we ever have the chance to go to Fiji again, Gene, we will come again! But this time, for a month!!!
A big and huge VINAKA VAKA LEVU!!!!!

A home away from home!

September 2013(Basildon, UK)

I spent four weeks in the Coconut Bure in June/July and could not have wished for a better place to stay. Gene, Sunita and Subash were wonderful hosts and made sure I had everything I needed (the home-cooked curries are fantastic, try them!). Gene took me to the local market and stores on my first days so I knew my way around. As a solo female traveler I found SigaSiga and Savusavu in general a safe haven and can only recommend it (I felt safe enough to walk on my own at 1am). The beach was beautiful, the fish colourful, and the locals absolutely wonderful. Not many things beat going snorkeling and being greeted with a big "Bula!" by a class of schoolchildren when coming back up :) SigaSiga is the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy peace and tranquility. On the other hand, you will never feel alone if you do not want to be. Just take a bus ride to SavuSavu or hitch a lift with Gene if he is available and you will find why Fijians are so famous for their smiles. Everybody is so friendly and embraces you with open arms. The amount of locals inviting me to visit them or to join them for a drink really made Savusavu a home away from home. I will cherish the memories of my time in Fiji forever. I am still overwhelmed by the impressions and experiences two months on! All in all, if I could, SigaSiga would get a thousand stars rather than just five. I will definitely be back! Vinaka vaka levu! (A little tip, try the cocktails in the Koro Sun Resort just down the road. Very nice!)

Sehr gut und günstig

September 2012(München, Germany)

Tolle Unterkunft.

ACHTUNG!!!!! Mückensprays mitnehmen, sonst wird man hier aufgefressen!!!

Thank you for taking the time to review SigaSiga Sands!

Re: the mosquitos
We are truly sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, the "mozzies" are persistent little buggers in this type of climate. We do our best to control them including the following:

  • Maintain clean grounds
  • Maintain good window screens
  • Mosquito nets are provided (rarely used)
  • Since this review, we have installed a state-of-the-art mosquito trap which utilizes heat, CO2 production, light, tack strip, human scent and a vacuum to attract and eliminate insects within an acre area surrounding our suites.
  • We provide coils which can be burned like incense nearby and are quite effective
  • We provide repellent

Some resorts spray poison throughout their land in an effort to control the mozzies. These same resorts supply insect repellent to their guests because the mozzies are ever present. Exceptions would be in the driest, hottest parts of the country. Here at SigaSiga, we pride ourselves in maintaining a strong environmental awareness in everything we do. So we are shy to blanket the area with poison. Being a beachfront property, we treasure the birds, flowers, and reef system that make this such a magical, natural wonderland.

SigaSiga Sands experiences a fairly consistent breeze of 15-20 knots throughout the year. This helps minimize any nuisance. I would also like to point out that the vast majority of our guests never complain or have issues with insects here. Some people are simply more sensitive than others. In fact, some people seem to be “mozzie magnets”! For these unfortunate few, we do our best to coach them to minimize any negative impact.
